This list includes a number of book references I swear by as well as a smattering of the people, writings, and research that have most influenced me over the years.

This list is broken out by the following topics:

Usability and Design

Don't Make Me Think
Steve Krug

If I had to pick one book on web usability, this would be it. I always keep it by my side as a reference when designing or updating websites. It’s amazingly informative, accessible, concise, humorous, and well designed.

Web Design for ROI
Lance Loveday & Sandra Niehaus

While the underlying message of this book is "Keep it Simple", there are tons of tips most web designers either wouldn't notice or don't consider to be important. This one definitely deserves a spot on your desk if you expect to make money online.

Usability.gov

The US government's usability web site. An amazingly deep resource. While the Fed gets a bad rap for poor service and bureaucracy, this site does its part to make the online experience as intuitive as possible.

Online Marketing

Publish & Prosper
Blogging for your Business
DL Byron and Steve Broback

This a great book for anyone starting a blog. They lay out how to get set up, and explain all the options. They detail the task of posting, getting traffic, and monitoring it. This book is thorough in spite of the fact of being less than 200 pages in length.

Search Engine Marketing

Complete Guide to Google Advertising
Bruce C. Brown

I find this book to be the perfect level for new affiliates of people who haven't experienced much luck so far.  It is a clearly organized book that will help you make sense of the ins-and-outs of Google advertising.

Mastering Yahoo! Panama
Mona Elesseily

Newly released in 2007, Mastering Panama is just in time to put some new life in your 2008 marketing campaigns and really unlock the profit potential lurking behind your Yahoo! Search Marketing campaigns.

SearchEngineWatch.com

The granddaddy of search engine resources, initially started by search guru Danny Sullivan. Their newsletter is excellent and their conference, Search Engine Strategies, is the biggest and best known search conference out there.

HighRankings.com

Thousands of people have learned the ins and outs of search engine optimization from industry expert Jill Whalen. Her web site and newsletter are full of educational content, always delivered with a dose of Jill’s personal warmth. If you want to learn how to optimize your site for search engines, this is a great place to start.

Search Engine Land

Danny and his colleague Chris Sherman have also created this site for more experienced search marketers. The newsletter is always insightful, as is the accompanying conference, Search Marketing Expo.
